Amoxicillin is a prescription oral medicine used to treat various bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. However, this medicine cannot treat infections such as colds and flu cases caused by viruses.

Amoxicillin prevents the bacteria from making a cell wall (protective covering), thus killing the bacteria.  

What is the dosage of amoxicillin (Moxatag)?

Amoxicillin is available as capsules (250 mg, 500 mg), tablets (500 mg, 875 mg), chewable tablets (125 mg, 200 mg, 250 mg, 400 mg), oral suspension or liquid (125 mg/5 mL, 200 mg/5 mL, 250 mg/5 mL, 400 mg/5 mL).

The typical dosing of amoxicillin varies greatly depending on the underlying infection being treated and the patient’s other health conditions. Usual doses are 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours or 500 mg to 875 mg every twelve hours in adults, teenagers, and children weighing more than 40 kg (88 pounds). In children weighing less than 40 kg (88 pounds), the doctor determines the amoxicillin dose based on the child’s weight (usually 25-45 mg/kg). The medicine is given in divided doses every 12 hours. In neonates and infants aged 3 months and younger, the recommended upper dose is 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours. As with all prescription drugs, always follow your health care provider’s medical advice and take amoxicillin exactly as prescribed.
