Directions
How should I take Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium)?
Take Lipitor as directed by your physician or pharmacist. This prescription is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water. You can take Lipitor with or without food.
Follow the directions on your prescription label for the Lipitor dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more Lipitor or take it more frequently than prescribed. Do not stop Lipitor without talking to your doctor first.
Lipitor may be given to children who have high LDL-C (bad cholesterol) levels that do not respond to diet alone. The starting dose in children is 10 mg by mouth daily—it can be increased after 4 weeks, not to exceed 20 mg by mouth daily. Speak with your pediatrician regarding special care and precautions if your child is on Lipitor.
Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Lipitor, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is less than 12 hours to your next Lipitor dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take two Lipitor doses within 12 hours.
Storage: Store Lipitor at room temperature (between 15-30 C or 59-86 F) away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight in a tightly closed container. Keep Lipitor out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Throw away any unused Lipitor after the expiration date. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
