Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) tips from pharmacists
Keep in mind that dry cough can develop months or years after the initiation of lisinopril and it can be very bothersome. Please do not hesitate to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about an alternative treatment plan if necessary.
Orthostatic hypotension is characterized as a drop in blood pressure when you stand up from sitting or laying down. Please take time when changing position and hold on to the side of the bed or part of the chair in order to avoid falls and injuries.
It is highly recommended that you monitor your blood pressure at home twice a day during the first month of being on lisinopril. This will give your doctor a better idea when adjusting the dose of lisinopril.
For women of child-bearing age, stop lisinopril immediately and inform your doctor when you find out that you are pregnant.
As mentioned above, lisinopril can cause a rise in serum potassium levels. That’s why it is very important to be compliant with lab and doctor appointments. Please be mindful about the consumption of potassium-rich food and drink such as banana, orange, orange juice, avocado, cantaloupe, coconut water, and sports drinks such as Gatorade. If your lab shows an elevated potassium level, please refrain from consuming potassium-rich food and drink.
