Risperidone Side Effects

Possible side effects of risperidone are listed below. Call your doctor if these side effects are severe or if they do not go away in a few days.

• Gastrointestinal symptoms like heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
• Dry mouth or increased saliva
• Increased appetite and weight gain
• Anxiety, restlessness, agitation
• Sleep difficulties, frequent dreams
• Breast enlargement, breast discharge
• Late or missed menstrual periods
• Muscle or joint pain
• Vision problems
• Sexual dysfunction
• Dry skin
• Difficulty urinating
• Dizziness, unsteadiness, balance problems

Some of the adverse events related to antipsychotic medications like risperidone can be more serious. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the following signs and symptoms:

• Fever, muscle stiffness, confusion
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Excessive sweating
• Unusual or uncontrolled movements
• Slowed movements or shuffling walk
• Fainting
• Seizures
• Allergic reactions (skin rash, hives, itching)
• Painful or prolonged erection
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of risperidone. Contact your healthcare provider if your side effects are unusual or severe or they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Risperidone Overdose: In case of an overdose of risperidone, call your doctor immediately. You can also call the local poison control center or national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Signs and symptoms of a risperidone overdose may include drowsiness; fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat; dizziness; blurred vision; upset stomach; fainting; and seizures.
