Directions
How should I take Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate)?
Take Augmentin as directed by your physician and/or pharmacist. The tablets are taken orally (by mouth) with a full glass of water every 8 hours (3 times a day) or every 12 hours (twice a day) at the start of meals.
The extended-release tablets are taken with meals every 12 hours (twice a day). Swallow the extended-release tablets whole - do not crush or chew them.
Chew the chewable tablets thoroughly before swallowing them. Shake the oral suspension each time before use to mix the medicine well.
Do not substitute the different formulations or doses of Augmentin for each. For example, do not take two 250-mg tablets instead of one 500-mg tablet - these tablets contain different amounts of clavulanic acid and cannot be substituted for one another.
Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct Augmentin dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day - this will help you remember to take your medicine. Do not take more Augmentin or take it more frequently than prescribed. Do not stop Augmentin without talking to your doctor first.
You might begin to feel better after a few days of taking Augmentin. However, you should finish your prescription even if you feel better. If you stop taking Augmentin before completing the course or skip doses, the infection may not be fully treated. This can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Augmentin can be used for bacterial infections in infants, children, and teenagers. Follow your pediatrician’s instructions regarding the appropriate dosing for your child.
Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Augmentin, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose. Avoid skipping doses and finish your prescription as directed by your doctor.
Storage: Store Augmentin tablets or powder at or below 25°C (77°F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container, it came in. The oral suspension (liquid) should be stored in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the liquid. Dispose of any unused liquid after 10 days. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets
Unused medicine: Throw away any unused or expired Augmentin. You should not flush medications down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medications is through a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
